The Aspiring to Assistant and Deputy Headship residential conference is a cross-phase course designed to advise and support on the application process for those seeking a senior leadership role in a Catholic School.

Day 1 of the conference will begin at 9:30am with Fr Des Seddon of the Archdiocese of Liverpool who focus on how we can shape the future and develop the vision in a Catholic setting; with the afternoon session led by Martin Johnson and Monica Walczak of the Diocese of Salford who will focus on managing staff and resources and different leadership styles in a Catholic school. The first day will conclude with an optional Eucharist at 5:00pm and we will regroup at 7:30pm for the evening meal after you have had the chance to socialise and network.

Day 2 will begin at 9:30am with Fran Wygladala and Richard Woods of the Diocese of Lancaster who will discuss teaching and learning within a Catholic setting followed by a presentation from Kevin Platt of the Diocese of Shrewsbury who will break down the application process for assistant or deputy head positions within a Catholic School. The day will then come to a close at 3:45pm after bespoke Diocesan advice in applying for leadership roles for your specific area.

The course will include presentations by tutors, group work and discussions, time for personal reflection, planning, prayer and celebration. It will also help participants consider the roles and responsibilities of an assistant or deputy headteacher in a Catholic setting by helping you to:

  • develop a vision and strategic view for the school which stems from the contemporary educational mission of the church;
  • develop the Spiritual dimension of leadership in a Catholic setting;
  • prepare to share responsibility in the management of staff and resources which demonstrates an awareness of their unique contribution as individuals, valued and loved by God;
  • in their search for excellence in teaching and learning which responds to the needs and aspirations of pupils in ways which acknowledge their individual worth as children of God;
  • prepare for making an application; have opportunities for networking in Dioceses.
