Aspiring to Headship Conference

The Aspiring to Headship residential conference is a cross-phase course designed to advise and support on the application process for those seeking an executive leadership role in a Catholic School.

Day 1 of the conference will begin at 9:30am with Fr Des Seddon of the Archdiocese of Liverpool who focus on how we can shape the future and develop the vision in a Catholic setting; with the afternoon session led by Fran Wygladala and Ricahrd Woods of the Diocese of Lancaster who will focus on managing the Catholic curriculum. The final session of the day will be led by Martin Johnson of the Diocese of Salford who will discuss effective managment of the organisation. The first day will conclude with an optional Eucharist at 5:15pm and we will regroup at 7:30pm for the evening meal after you have had the chance to socialise and network.

Day 2 will begin at 9:30am with Denise Hegarty of the Diocese of Salford who will discuss securing accountability followed by a presentation from Kevin Platt of the Diocese of Shrewsbury who will break down the application process for executive leadership positions within a Catholic School. The day will then come to a close at 3:45pm after bespoke Diocesan advice in applying for leadership roles for your specific area.

​The course will include presentations by tutors from across the North West Catholic Dioceses, group work and discussions, time for personal reflection, planning, prayer and celebration. It will encourage you to consider the roles and responsibilities of a Headteacher in a Catholic setting by helping you to:

  • develop a vision and strategic view for the school which stems from the contemporary educational mission of the church;
  • develop the spiritual dimension of leadership in a Catholic setting;
  • in their search for excellence in teaching and learning which responds to the needs and aspirations of pupils in ways which acknowledge their individual worth as children of God;
  • prepare for the management of staff which demonstrates an awareness of their unique contribution as individuals, valued and loved by God;
  • promote the common good of the school / college community through its deployment of staff, finance, material resources, time and energy;
  • deepen their understanding of the relationships between the school / college and governing board, parishes, wider community, diocese, Local Authority and wider community;
  • prepare an application; have opportunities for networking in dioceses


Residential: £350.00 pp

Non Residential: £275.00 pp
